๐ Sound Transit extends train service to Redmond
Last weekend, Seattleโs East-side light rail line (the 2 Line) expanded to two additional stations in Redmond
The City of Redmond has been reinventing itself and aims to go from suburb to city by 2050. Itโs already well on its way with a ton of new housing built downtown in advance of this opening.
I am particularly excited about the potential of this opening because I believe many living in downtown Redmond are likely to take the train to Microsoft or Downtown Bellevue for work, and I think the new Marymoor Park Station will be very popular for anyone attending concerts or circus shows there. And did you know they have a Velodrome!?

Welcome to the 2 Line!
Seattleโs 1 Line began service between Downtown Seattle and SEA Airport 16 years ago in 2009 and has expanded North several times since then, now reaching North of Seattle to Mountlake Terrace, Shoreline and Lynwood, eventually extending to Everett. The line will expand South to Federal Way later this year, and eventually all the way to Tacoma (all of these extensions are already voter-approved). This line already has the highest ridership per mile of any light rail system in the US.
The separate 2 Line opened last year, starting at South Bellevue (I-90 & Bellevue Way) and extending North with stops at Old Main Street, Downtown Bellevue (three blocks from the mall because Kemper Freeman wants you to drive), Wilburton (near Overlake Hospital & Whole Foods), Spring District (a brand new neighborhood with Meta offices, Bellevue Brewing & new housing), Bel-Red Road, Overlake Village and ending at Redmond Technology (Microsoft). Microsoft is completely redeveloping its campus to orient around this new access point.
The lines currently operate independently due to construction issues crossing the I-90 bridge (issues with the concrete railroad ties). The schedule has slipped numerous times but there seems to be confidence in the latest โearly 2026โ projection to connect the lines and the region has committed to FIFA to have it done before we host part of the World Cup next year.
Anyone on the Seattle side wanting to check out the 2 Line can take the ST 550 Express Bus from Downtown Seattle to South Bellevue Station (very frequent, fast, and easy) or drive there and park in the Park & Ride garage.
I have visited Bellevue several times since the 2 Line opened and explored several areas I wouldnโt have otherwise. I have to say, it really makes Bellevue feel newly walkable and cosmopolitan. I canโt wait for it to be truly connected via 1-90 early next year.
The 2 line now ends at an elevated station in Downtown Redmond next to Redmond Town Center and a brand new Downtown Park that is surrounded by restaurants and new housing, unlike Lynwood City Center which has nothing yet.
A lot of people showed up for the opening! This was towards the end of the festivities, Iโm told there were thousands at the start.
A brand new trail and bridge connects Redmond Town Center (mall) / Downtown Redmond over a river and under the SR 520 Freeway to provide a pleasant walk to Marymoor Park.
The new station at Marymoor Park features a huge park & ride and new trails connecting to the park and to downtown.
There were festivities happening everywhere ๐

This sign shows all the stuff you can get to in Marymoor Park. I had no idea there is a velodrome for bike racing here, itโs celebrating its 50th anniversary! Just next to it, the Recreation & Events area hosts Cirque do Soleilโs annual visit. The Concert Venue is a 10-15 minute walk (lower left) which is much better than the currently horrendous parking situation which everyone can vouch for. https://www.marymoorlive.com/
This is an aside but did you know King County has an extensive network of Biking & Walking Trails called Leafline? It includes the Burke Gillman everyone in Seattle knows but also the growing Eastrail Trail and much more. They aim to connect Renton to Woodinville.
