I moved to Seattle in 2001 to attend the University of Washington. I had been accepted into the UW Business School (now Foster Business) through their FRAP, not a Frappuccino, but the Freshman Admission Program.
This included a whopping $1000 scholarship and I was able to begin attending business classes as a freshman and didnโt have to apply to the school to declare my major. It was a nice head start, and really the only perk I had coming to UW (I turned down a full ride at University of Oregon because it was too close to home and I wanted to live in a cityโI wanted that city to be Boston, but Iโm so happy I ended up here instead).
After my freshman year, I stayed in Seattle for the Summer in order to qualify as a resident for in-state tution for the rest of my years in college. I moved from McCarty Hall where Iโd lived for all of Freshman year to Lander Hall, the Summer dorm, and I got a front desk job at Haggett Hall.
This was my first real job other than the water meter reading I had done in my neighborhood during high school. On the first day, we cleaned the lobby of Haggett Hall and designed new bulletin boards. I drew the Space Needle on a poster and was very proud of it. I could not believe I was being paid $8 per hour for this time as it felt just like what I had done in leadership class in high school.
