My name is Alex Porter and this is my story.

🎂 Childhood

I was born 43 years ago in 1983, the only child of two librarians in Connecticut in the United States of America.

My family has always been small. On my mom’s side, we’re down to just me and my mom, having lost my grandma in 2023 at the age of 101. My dad died of cancer in 2017, leaving us with three half-brothers, an uncle and an aunt and their families.

My parents each came from middle class families. Both previously married, they worked hard in their second marriage to build a great life together and to give me opportunities to succeed for which I am very grateful.

We lived in a rural town small house in a rural town. I spent a lot of my time at daycare with my second mom and closest childhood friends, including my friend

🎓 Education

I attended a small liberal arts school for kindergarten through 8th grade, and in 1994, my parents retired and we moved to Oregon where I went to public high school.

🗺️ My parents instilled in me a love for Art , Music, Books, Nature, Maps, and Exploration. My dad once told me nothing is impossible, and his pointing out every little thing to me likely led to my curiosity which has he,ped me learn much about the universe.

✨ I love learning about the Universe and exploring the limits of space, time, math, and love.

These qualities that have given me a vibrant and exciting perspective of the world we live in.

🪄 I was raised in the pre-internet analog era of rotart phones, VHS tapes

I moved to Seattle, Washington in 2001 to study Business at the University of Washington.

After college, I spent 8 years

I love my home, Seattle, Washington, and spend as much time exploring and sharing the culture and nature of the city.

It is a city that is always growing and evolving, and I am to love every version of it including it’s challenges and how it aims to solve them fairly and with love.

My home is Seattle, Washington, where I decided to settle after attending the University of Washington and launching my career.

I’ve been fortunate to explore much of the planet, beginning at a young age. I’ve been to every continent except for Antarctica, though I barely count Africa since I only spent a day in Morocco.

Since you’re here and you’re already reading this, I’ll take a moment to introduce myself.

▶️ Progress

I find it fascinating to explore and understand how everything came to be the way it is today here on Earth. Because we humans only live about 100 years, little changes in the grand scheme of things so we think this is how it has always been. But when you zoom out and see how much has changed in a very short time, you start to realize just how powerful we each are and how much opportunity we have been given to make our world the way we want it to be.

I’ve been very blessed during my 42 years here. Until recently, my life was very average compared to my peers, but when I took a break and started looking at it, I recognized just how privileged I am. I was born white, in the United States and raised with a mildly Christian upbringing attending a Methodist church from the age of -14.

During my time here, I have traveled far and wide, to every continent except Antarctica and I’m blessed to have made friends who now live all over the planet. Maybe you’re already one of them or maybe I haven’t met you yet, but I’m glad you’re here.

⏱️ Age

I’m a member of the Xennial generation, people born between 1978 and 1984. We consider ourselves special because we were kids in the analog era and we were the youngest members of the digital era.

We knew how to use a rotary phone and stayed up late talking to our friends on land lines, but we also we also sent our friends coded messages on pagers, bought colorful covers for our Nokia cell phones, and were among the first iPhone owners (we skipped the blackberries, they were for old business people).

My parents were both librarians, and it turns out that I am as well, I just didn’t realize it until recently.

I’ve spent my life organizing things, from a variety of collections I kept as a child including Beanie Babies, Where’s Waldo books and merch, coins, stamps, and magazine ads for Absolut Vodka.

I spent my career building and implementing systems to help organizations get organized.

Instead, I said, it was the beginning of my second 40. In my head, I was sort of joking, but I have now lived that as my truth as I have set out to rediscover my self in the years since 2020, when I quit my job to start my own company.
